Three Things that Living in Japan Taught me About Creating a Happier Life
Have you ever been to Japan? From 2018-2020, I can say that I was fortunate to live in Okinawa, Japan.
Even though it was not easy being far away from friends and family, I can say that I wholly enjoyed my time spent on the other side of the world. Living in Japan left an indelible mark on my heart and taught me a lot about life. Here are three things I learned about living a happier life while living in Japan…
Lesson 1: People always remember how you treat them.
In Japan, there seems to be a sense of respect and consideration for others no matter where you go. Whether you’re walking into a store, dining in a restaurant, or visiting a friend — there is a good chance that you will be made to feel acknowledged and welcome.
Lesson 2: We really don’t need that much.
There are a lot of people in the relatively geographically small country of Japan, and space is limited! There simply is not very much room for an excess of “stuff” in most homes. I really came to appreciate downsizing and taking a more minimal approach to buying and owning material goods.
Lesson 3: Including a daily walk into my routine benefits me mentally, spiritually, and physically.
In many parts of Japan, walking is much more convenient than driving. Pretty soon after we arrive, I began walking every single day. I very quickly realized that walking was a gentle form of movement that helps me feel better in so many ways. I have fond memories of walking all over different parts of Japan — including my neighborhood in Okinawa, but also throughout Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo.
There are so many other things I loved about living in Japan, but these three lessons stand out to me the most. In fact, even though it’s been over two years since we left, I can honestly say that I still try to apply these lessons into my life in some way everyday.
